2005 Wrestling Banquet |
|

The Mustangs and the Boosters
wrapped up the 2004-05 wrestling season with the Annual
Wrestling Banquet, held March 7, 2005 at the Georgetowne
Club. The banquet honored the freshman, JV and Varsity
wrestlers and was capped by a tribute to retiring coach
Mel Masek (pictured). Among the award winners for
team wrestling awards were
Josh Heinke (Shaun Busch Ironman
Award and
RJ Nebe Most Improved
Wrestler
Award ),
Steve Wanning (Rick Allgood
Most Valuable Wrestler Award and
Braumon Creighton High Point
Award),
Lucas Stark and
Alex Edmonds (Freshman of the Year) and
Erik Vance (Masek/Craney JV Wrestler of the Year).
Scholarships were awarded to seniors Devin Rimington,
Cody McGee, Josh Koessel and Todd Muckey.
George Verplank and Tony Cimino were recognized as
Patrons of the Year.

The
Mustangs entered the state tournament with high hopes and
finished 12th overall with 60 points. Joel Kelpe
paced the Mustangs and made the Walk of Champions as the club's
sole finalist. Joel came away with the 2nd place medal,
joining two other teammates as medalists: Josh Heinke
(112 lbs, 4th) and Stephen Wanning (119 lbs, 5th).

|

|
Freshman Alex Edmonds stunned
the field to claim the District A2 135 lbs title.

The Mustangs finished as
Runners-Up in the District A2 Championships at Papillion
LaVista HS on February 12, 2005. The Mustangs qualified
12 of 14 wrestlers for the State Championships in Lincoln.
Seven wrestlers went to the finals and 4 Mustangs emerged as
district champs.

|
The
Mustangs came up short on Parents night with a loss to powerful
Creighton Prep. The Mustangs were led by wins by Josh
Heinke, Steve Wanning, Matt Clark, Cody McGee, Joel Kelpe and
Matt Stom.

Millard North 9th Grade Meet
|
|
On
January 24th, 2005, Millard North Hosted a Freshman Tournament.
Although no team scores were kept, the team did well, going
17-15 in matches. Two Millard North wrestlers were
undefeated: Alex Barnes (125 lbs) and Dan Anderson (140
lbs).

John Higgins Invitational |
|
The
Mustang varsity and JV teams made their annual pilgrimage to
Lexington on January 22, 2005 for the John Higgins Invitational
Tournament. The Varsity Squad was paced by Stephen Wanning
(pictured above), who captured the championship at 119 lbs.
Other varsity placers included Josh Heinke 112, 5th), Matt
Jeffries (130, 3rd), Matt Clarke (160, 5th), Cody McGee (171,
5th) and Joel Kelpe (189, 4th). Millard North finished
tied for 7th in a field of 16 schools.

The JV team was led by Eric Vance (125
lbs) and Lucas Stark (112 lbs), (pictured) who
each finished with a championship. Other placers inluded
Matt Stom, Ben Heinke, Darren Demulling, Mike Wrenn, Dan
Engstrom, Andy Miller, Taylor Vaughn and Mike Osborne.

Mustangs Overpower Omaha South |
|

Millard North did not play the role of polite guests as they
defeated Omaha South 67-8 at South High on January 18, 2005.
The Mustangs got pins from Josh Heinke, Stephen Wanning, Matt
Jeffries, Alex Edmonds, Matt Clark, Cody McGee, Joel Kelpe
and Devin Rimington to pace the team. Nate
Elwood and Luper Akough pinned their way to victory
in their JV matches.

Metro Tournament |
|
The
Mustangs entered another tough tournament this week (January
14-15, 2005) at
Papillion-LaVista South. The Metro Tournament is an annual
clash of all the Class A teams from the Omaha area. The
Mustangs placed 8th out of 16 teams with 9 medalists:

Mustangs returned from the Christmas vacation to their toughest
challenge yet at the Millard West Invitational Tournament
(January 8, 2005). In a field loaded with ranked wrestlers and
returning medalists the Mustangs had their work cut for
them. Mustang medalists included Steve Wanning
(pictured, 3rd), Matt Jeffries (4th), Matt Clarke
(4th) and Cody McGee (4th).

|
The
Mustangs topped seven other teams as they once again captured
the title at the Sioux City Invite. The Mustangs sent 8
wrestlers to the finals and 5 were crowned as champions.

the Bunnies |

Millard
North took advantage of a depleted Benson team 52-12 on December
12, 2004. Lucas Stark, Matt Jeffries, Matt Clark, Joel
Kelpe and Adam Lawrence cruised to victories while
Josh Heinke, Steve Wanning, Josh Koessel, Alex Edmonds and Cody McGee won by
forfeit to provide the huge margin of victory. The JV
squad turned in another excellent performance in dual
competition as well.

Lincoln East/Kearney Tri-Dual |
|

The MN Mustangs made their annual trek to Lincoln to
dual Kearney and Lincoln East. The Varsity Squad earned 7
victories in each dual but dropped both Duals in hard fought
contests. Cody McGee (pictured) paced the Mustangs
with two pins.

Bellevue East Dual |
|
 |
The Mustangs fought a see-saw battle with
Bellevue East on December 7. Unfortunately Millard North
ended up on the losing side with a final score of 39-33.
The match featured wins by Michael Wrenn, Steve Wanning, Alex
Edmonds, DJ Coleman, Cody McGee and Joel Kelpe.

Wymore on December 4, 2004 and cruised to a second place
finish, with championships awarded to Lucas Stark and Erik

The
Mustangs visited North High for the 59th Annual Vern Ekfelt
Wrestling Tournament on
December 2-3, 2004. The Mustangs improved on their
finish from a year ago to finish in 5th place.
The Mustangs came home with eight medals and
Matt Jeffries was awarded the Mancuso Brothers Trophy for
the most pins in the tournament (4) in the shortest amount of
time (7 min, 20 sec).
