Banquet 2006

Seniors (l-r) Steve Wanning, Joel Kelpe, Matt

a total of $2000 in scholarships by the Millard
North Booster Club |
The Booster Club members bid
adieu to the 2005-06 season with a memorable banquet.
Five graduating seniors received scholarships from the
Booster Club and the coaches distributed Varsity Letters and
awards in a night filled with fun and warm memories.
Each wrestler was individually recognized by the Coaches.
Among the wrestlers receiving special recognition were
Garrett Allen, Taylor Vaiskunas and Scott Quandahl who
shared the Matt Graves/Grant Sather Outstanding 9th Grade
Wrestler award. Dan Engstrom was recognized as
the Most Improved Wrestler of the year and also won the Mel
Masek/Dan Craney Award as the Outstanding JV Wrestler.
Matt Jeffries was named as the recipient of the Shawn
Busch Ironman Award. Joel Kelpe earned the High
Point Wrester Award and Stephen Wanning was named the
Rick Allgood Most Valuable Wrestler Award for the second
year in a row. The Booster Club also honored our
Patron of the Year, "Chef Geno" Clark.

State
Championship
Millard North sent eight
wrestlers to the Qwest Center and finished 10th among the 32
class A schools. The competition was fierce and two
Mustangs advanced to the finals. Senior Steve
Wanning capped off his wrestling career with a
championship at 119 lbs by defeating Jae Torpy of Millard
South 13-0. Senior Joel Kelpe was the runner up
at 215 lbs. Finishes by all Mustangs are
shown below.

District A2
Championships

The District Championships
were held at Millard South HS on February 11 to determine
who would advance to the State Wrestling Championships
at the Qwest Center. The Mustangs sent 5 wrestlers to
the finals and advanced 8 wresters to the State Tournament
in this tough District. Stephen Wanning (119),
Alex Edmonds (145) and Joel Kelpe (215) won
their brackets to become District Champs; Matt Jeffries
(130) and Erik Vance (135) took second, Ben
Heinke (112) and Josh Heinke (125) finished in
3rd and Taylor Vaughn (152) qualified in 4th place.
Papillion-LaVista
South Tournament
The JV Team competed on
February 8th and we had five undefeated wrestlers: Dan
Engstrom, Kylan Clanton, Derek Ulch, Jacob McClinton and
David Bailey.

Bellevue West Tournament
The Mustang JV squad finished
5th in the Bellevue West Tournment on February 4th, 2006.
Three wrestlers finished first: Dan Engstrom, Taylor
Vaughn and Derek Ulch. Kylan Clanton finished second and
Jacob Smith finished third.
Metro
Dual Championships
The Mustangs went 2-1 in the Metro
Duals to finish 5th among the 8 participating schools. After
dropping the opening dual to Omaha Burke High 43-29, the Mustangs
rallied to defeat Bellevue West 49-23 and District A2 foe Omaha
Bryan 44-27. Stephen Wanning picked up his 100 win by
pinning Joe Grutenmeyer of Bellevue West.

The Team took a circuitous route to
Norfolk, but captured third place by placing 11 wrestlers in the
medal rounds. Seniors Stephen Wanning (119), Matt
Jeffries (130) and Joel Kelpe delivered in their with 1st
place finishes.

Prep Dual
The Mustangs took a trip to the
Birdcage and dropped the away dual to Creighton Prep 56-21.
Highlights included a pin by Stephen Wanning (119) a decision
by Josh Heinke (125) and a pin by Matt Jeffries of
4th-ranked Kelsey Vaughn at 135 lbs. Joel Kelpe picked up a
default win at 275 lbs. JV wrestlers were also in action in

Varsity: The Mustangs finished sixth in
a packed field of tough teams placing three in the finals.
Stephen Wanning (119) and Joel Kelpe (215)
were crowned champions and Matt Jeffries took 2nd at
130. Other medalists included Josh Heinke (4th
at 125), Erik Vance (6th at 135), Alex Edmonds
(6th at 145), Brian Newton(4th at 171) and
Wade Gilmer (6th at 189). JV news is coming

Junior Varsity:
No team score was
kept but the Mustang JV squad
brought home 8 medals. Medalists included Taylor
Vaiskunas (103, 2nd), Scott Quandahl (125, 2nd),
David Bailey (125, 6th), Jacob Smith (130,
4th), Dan Engstrom (135, 1st), Kylan Clanton
(135, 2nd), Derek Ulch (140, 2nd) and Tyler Tews
(215, 5th).

Plattsmouth Dual / Parents Night
The Parent's night festivities were
jolly but the Mustangs fell short in their dual
meet with Platttsmouth Blue Devils 51-24. The Mustangs got
wins from Taylor Vaiskunas, Stephen Wanning, Josh Heinke, Erik
Vance, Alex Edmonds and Brian Newton.

West Tournament, 1-7-07
A depleted Millard North Team
finished in a disappointing ninth place finish, with Joel
Kelpe leading the way with a first place finish at 215
lbs.Champion- Joel Kelpe (215); 3rd- Eric Vance (130), Alex
Edmonds (145); 6th- Josh Heinke (119), Brian Newton (171);
7th- Taylor Vaughn (152). The team was missing 5
starters from line-up.

Metro
Conference Championships

The Mustangs competed at the Metro
tournament on January
13-14, 2006. It was a tough test of team strength. The Mustangs put 5 wrestlers in the
semifinals and were paced by Stephen Wanning, who captured
the Metro Championship at 119 lbs. Other Mustang placers
included Ben Heinke (112, 5th), Josh Heinke (125,
4th), Matt Jeffries (130, 3rd), Erik Vance (135, 4th),
Alex Edmonds (145, 4th) and Joel Kelpe (215, 2nd).
The Mustangs earned 6th place in the Metro Conference.

At the Christmas break,
several Mustangs are currently ranked in the state at their
respective weight classes.
The Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (NSWCA)
currently ranks the Mustangs at 10th in class A.
Huskermat rates the Mustangs 9th as a team. Senior
Joel Kelpe tops the rankings in both polls at 215 lbs.

performance in S. Sioux City, finishing second out of eight
teams. Seven Mustangs reached the finals with
championships at 119, 130, 135 and 215. Every Mustang

Duals, December 13, 2005
The Mustangs fared well in
their dual with Millard West, achieving a solid 56-24
victory. This dual was highlighted by pins by Ben Heinke (112),
Josh Heinke(119), Steve Wanning (125), Matt
Jeffries (135), Darren Demulling (145) and Taylor Vaughn
(160). The Mustangs dropped their dual with #1 ranked
Millard South 20-53, scoring victories at 119, 125, 135, and
215.

1st Annual
East West Duals, December 10, 2005

The Mustangs logged 5 duals in
one day as they participated in the first ever East West
Duals held at Kearney HS. The Mustangs were paced by seniors
Joel Kelpe (5-0), Matt Jeffries (4-1) and
Stephen Wanning (4-1) and junior Ben Heinke
(4-1). The Mustangs rallied from an early drubbing at
the hands of eighth ranked Lincoln East (58-9) to finish third out of 6
teams (3-2 record) with victories over fourth-ranked Creighton Prep
(45-32), second ranked Omaha Burke (47-27) and Grand Island (36-31).
The Mustang's other loss was a close one to #5 Kearney (42-33).

The
Annual Vern Ekfelt Tournament was a great success!
The Mustangs finished third, 2.5 points behind
second place Omaha North. Joel Kelpe was
crowned champion at 215 lbs and nine other Mustangs
took home medals.

Blue
Silver Wrestle-Off

The 2005-06 season kicked off on Tuesday,
November 22 with the Blue-Silver matches. Wrestlers
vied for spots on the Varsity and JV teams. Coach
White also named the Captains of the team for 2005-06.
